As
the United Progressive Alliance completed 100 days in office,
Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi called a meeting of
the members of the AICC. The conclave at the Talkatora Stadium
was named Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, in memory of the leader who
ushered in a new era in Indian economy and polity. Future
historians will surely highlight the radical change this
youngest Prime Minister of India brought in his just one
term in office. The remarkable feature of Rajiv’s contribution
was that he changed the entire political outlook of the
nation and the purpose of politics through an economic instrument
– reforms. His courageous and visionary steps were timely
and strong. It was as if the nation was waiting for this
great messiah! Indian politics and economics never remained
the same after him. Every party and activist in the national
and regional political spectrum followed his economic reforms
without hesitation. So much so, even a rightist party like
the BJP had to adopt Rajiv line to go to the people. Suddenly,
socio-economic development through reforms has become the
main spirit of every political party. Today no-political
party, be it of the Left or the Right, can afford to talk
obsolete narrow sectarian causes. What matters to the people
is growth with justice and equity, thanks to Rajiv Gandhi.
The AICC meeting resolved once again to pursue the path
Rajivji had shown.
