Emulate Karnataka : Sonia Gandhi

SUTTUR (MYSORE): The Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, praised the Non-Governmental Organisations and religious leaders for their role in implementing social welfare programmes and said they made a positive difference to development work initiated by the Karnataka Government.

She was launching the telemedicine facility as part of the "Model health Village Programme," a joint venture of the JSS Mahavidyapeetha and Narayana Hrudayalaya here on September 2.

Smt. Gandhi said although the Government had funds, the involvement of swamijis and NGOs made a difference to the implementation of the schemes. "Every time I come to Karnataka, I am struck by the dynamism and dedication of the people in taking up novel programmes for the masses. Wherever I go in North India, I always mention how people in Karnataka never fail to come out with development programmes and ask them to emulate this."

Smt. Gandhi called for similar initiatives elsewhere so that people in rural areas had access to good healthcare. The three-month programme is intended to address the health problems of the villagers. Said to be the first such initiative in the country, the project is expected to make Suttur India’s first "Health Village" and benefit more than 5,000 people in and around Suttur.

The project entails the creation of a healthcare database of all people in the village through a house-to-house survey.

The Chief Minister, Shri S.M. Krishna, who presided over the function, said the major health initiative launched by the Government, the Yashaswini Health programme, was a success and covered 16 lakh farmers in the State. Already more than 5,000 farmers had constituted a cooperative society with a monthly contribution of Rs. 5 to ensure coverage of major surgical intervention when necessary.

The Congress president, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, issued the following press statement on August 25, 2003.

"I condemn the serial blasts that occurred in Mumbai in the strongest possible term. It is apparent that they have been planned and executed by anti-national forces. They should be counter-acted by the agencies of the State Government and Central Government without giving any quarter whatsoever. I have spoken to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra to ascertain the facts and to urge him to take stern steps to deal with the forces responsible for these dastardly crimes. I convey my deepest sympathies to the members of the bereaved families."

Punish the Mischief-makers: Sonia Gandhi

The Congress president, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, asked the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Shri Sushil Kumar Shinde, on August 26 to ensure that blasts such as recent ones in Mumbai "do not recur" with terrorist from outside" striking with substantial impact. She visited the places where the two blasts took place and met the people.

Smt. Gandhi said firmly : "Trace them, catch and punish" the mischief-makers. Fighting the menace called terrorism, she said, was the joint task of the State and the Centre and "we have to work on this together."

The Maharashtra Govt. had to "be extremely alert" and "do all it can so that such tragedies like the one that happened on 25 August do not occur". "I have asked the Chief Minister that the Govt. should see to it that they do not occur again."

She said while talking to correspondents at the Gateway of India that Shri Shinde had assured her that "he would go all out and deal with the culprits responsible for killing the innocent".
