Condolence Message

The Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, condoled the death of a Meghalaya cabinet minister in the helicopter crash at Borapani near Shillong. In a message to Chief Minister, Shri D.D. Lapang, she said, ÒI have just heard about the shocking news of a helicopter crash at Borapani near Shillong in which one of your cabinet colleagues and four MLAs lost their lives. I could well imagine the anguish and sorrow of the families of the deceased and colleagues like you. Please convey my heartfelt condolences and feelings of empathy and support to members of the bereaved families

Shastriji: A Man of Integrity

"No person can aspire for a better friend, a better associate than Lal Bahadur Shastri in any field of work. He is a man of integrity and devotion and dedicated to his ideals and objects. He is conscientious and hard worker. We cannot hope a better man than him. He feels the pick of conscience when he sees some flaw in the work entrusted to him. I have great regards for him. I have full faith that we would continue to work together in the future as well."

- Jawaharlal Nehru

"The whole life of Shastriji was dedicated to the nation. He worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the people, especially, the rural people. The people of India can never forget him. His dutifulness, simplicity and high thinking will always inspire us. The whole nation is indebted to him."

- Indira Gandhi

"His many achievements as fighter for freedom, as Minister in the UP Cabinet and Minister in the Union Cabinet are well known. Lal Bahadur Shastri worked for the organisation of the Congress party in the post-independence years. He was a quiet, unostentatious but determined nationalist."

- Dr. S. Radhakrishnan

"The mission which Lal Bahadur took upon himself to lift vast sections of our people from poverty remains unfulfilled. His span of life was cut short by cruel fate as suddenly and as unexpectedly as he was chosen leader."

- Dr. Zakir Hussain

"Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri's life will always be regarded as the Indian equivalent of "From the log-Cabin to the White House." A modest boy from the banks of the Ganga near Banaras rose to be a Bharat Ratna. By the sheer dint of character and dedication, he rose steadily in the nation's esteem and affection and came to occupy the highest position in the land. So steadfastly has he served the Congress and the people that after Shri Jawaharlal Nehru's demise he was the nation's natural choice for prime ministership. By the manner in which he braved the challenges and gave his all for the country, Shastriji has a permanent place in the hearts of our people."

- Rajiv Gandhi

"A true Gandhian, Shastriji manifested his commitment to truth and non-violence, democracy and secularism, throughout his life. He served the nation selflessly, safeguarded India's security fearlessly, until his last breath."

- Sonia Gandhi
