In the four months the Congress-led UPA formed the government at the Centre, numerous initiatives have been taken to undo the damage done by the BJP-led NDA regime and to take the nation forward in a number of crucial areas. Be it talks with Pakistan, burnishing the image of India among the investing community abroad or attending to the vexing Naxalite problem in some states, the government strove hard to fulfil the promises made in the Congress Election manifesto. Steps have also been taken to annul draconian laws like POTA which generated apprehensions among minorities. The Congress Party believes that every citizen must enjoy equal rights and live without fear. It was this liberal approach that nurtured democracy in free India despite amazing religious and caste diversity. The NDA rule under the BJP stewardship sought to reverse this process causing great concern among the people who were aware that pluralism alone can keep India united and strong. The Congress party under the leadership of Smt. Sonia Gandhi worked hard, spared no efforts to check the process of degeneration caused by the BJP, and finally succeeded at the hustings. As Smt. Gandhi told the recently held AICC meeting in New Delhi, the rank and file of the Congress Party should not rest on this victory. Every Congress worker must join the Journey of Renewal, as Smt. Gandhi called, to rid the nation from the menace of sectarianism.
