The dastardly attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and on Pentagon in Washington which claimed several thousand lives have brought into a sharp focus the urgent need to fight terrorism universally. The U.S. which was shell shocked reacted, predicably, in great anger. It moved fast to constitute an international “Coalition Against Terrorism” and after soliciting cooperation from all nations has begun direct war on Osama bin Laden, the fountainhead of terrorism. India and the Congress party welcomed the U.S. campaign against terrorism.

Since India suffered most at the hands of terrorists, it expected the anti-terrorist coalition to take into account this fact in formulating its campaign. One of India’s expectations was that the U.S would place on the “Black List” the Jaish-e-Mohammed. Unfortunately, this did not happen. The apparent unidirectional approach of the coalition disappointed India. Speaking on terrorism at a seminar at Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, said “we must fight terrorism on our own”.
