The election of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi as Congress President will go down in the annals of this oldest and largest political party as a unique and historic milestone. The party has accepted her with record majority in an election that was fought well. The 7848-strong electoral college has also shown that unlike other parties Congress practices what it preaches - internal democracy. No other party could have dared such a contest and yet come out stronger and united. In true democratic traditions of the party, she told the victory rally at 24, Akbar Road, that her challenger, Mr. Jitendra Prasada, had the right to contest and that she would strive to strengthen the party....
