Mahila Congress

Due to earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir, the communal riots manipulated in Mau and floods in some other areas, a substantial part of the Mahila Congress activities in October were related to relief work. A Mahila Congress team led by its president, Dr. Rita Bahuguna Joshi, visited Mau and toured the troubled areas on the 21st and 22nd with the PMC president, Dr. Sudha Rai, despite restricted movements due to curfew. They met the Governor Shri T.V. Rajeshwar in Mau on the 22nd, and presented a memorandum to him apprising him of their findings and demanding urgent rehabilitation of the victims, Rs. 5 Lakh from the UP Government to families of those killed, enquiry by a sitting High Court Judge and immediate arrest of and punishment to the culprits. The Mahila Congress, through the PMC president, distributed grains worth Rs. 50,000/- in the effected areas. Mrs. Indu Pawar, Mrs. Waqar (VP, PMC), Mr.s Nazia (Councillor, Srinagar and Ms. Musarat went as a team to various areas of J & K, from 11th to 19th, for relief work. They worked in Kamalkot and Madi on the 11th, Leetwal and Gingli on 14th, and Tungdhar, and in Uri on the 19th. The Mahila Congress is collecting funds for the victims.

The Mahila Congress held awareness meetings/ rallies/ demonstrations, etc., against female infanticide in all states between 21st to 25th. In Eastern UP these could not be held due to the situation in Mau. In all district headquarters of Uttaranchal these demonstrations were held between these dates. In Haryana, Padyatra was taken out, led by 20 schoolgirls, also attended by activists from neighbouring districts, attended by Dr. Shobhana Shah (AIMC incharge of the state). She also participated in a human chain with the Mahila Congress at Indore (MP). In Chandigarh, Maj. Krishna Mohini (AIMC incharge of the state) led, alongwith the PMC president, an awareness procession through rural areas of Raipur (Dehradun), which also collected funds for the Kashmiri earthquake victims in sealed boxes, which will be opened at the time of presentation. She also led a similar procession through the markets of Chandigarh's Sector 29, 30, 31, aided by the Chandigarh Mahila Congress president, also collecting funds in sealed boxes. In Gujarat, a demonstration was held at Mehsana, attended by Dr. Sushma Yadav (AIMC incharge of the state).

A Mahila Congress meeting attended by about 1,000 women was held on the 1st, after 17 years, at Darjeeling, attended by activists from all 11 blocks and the ex and the present MPs from Bengal. Mrs. Manju Hembrum (AIMC incharge of the state) attended it. The PMC distributed Saris and blankets to d500 women in Siliguri on the 2nd. A Block level meeting attended by 750 women was held at Haldibari on the 3rd.

Mrs. Meera Singh (AIMC incharge of the state) stayed in Bihar for electioneering work, touring the Congress candidates' constituencies. In Gujarat, Dr. Sushma Yadav organized women for electioneering work for the Zila Panachayat elections in Gujarat.

Mr. Madhu Jain (AIMC incharge of state) led about 250 women in a joint procession by the Congress frontal organizations in Jaipur, against the rape of a lady Sarpanch from the CM's constituency.
