The
JNU students who shouted at Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan
Singh when he was delivering an address at the 36th Annual
Day of the University have not covered themselves in glory
nor achieved anything. In fact they have harmed the so-called
cause which they thought they were supporting. Ironically
Dr. Singh was speaking on Free Speech and as he went on
defending the right of every citizen to free speech, a group
of left wing students provided evidence how this crucial
right can be grossly and easily misused by hooting at him
and disrupting the meeting. Protests are, no doubt, part
of the democratic process. But protests that lead to disruption
and destruction always strike at the root of the Right to
Free Speech. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru whose statue, Dr. Singh
had unveiled, said "freedom is in peril, defend it
with all your might". Prophetic words from the visionary
who was the greatest defender of fundamental rights. It
will take a long time before the prestigious JNU washes
out the blot on its image.
