Shivraj
Patil, LS Deputy Leader

DELHI :
The former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Mr. Shivraj Patil,
has been appointed the deputy leader of the Congress party
in the Lok Sabha by the leader of the Opposition Mrs. Sonia
Gandhi on November 8. Mrs. Sonia Gandhi communicated this
decision to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr. G.M.C. Balayogi.
The
post fell vacant after the death of Mr. Madhavrao Scindia
in a plane crash on September 30. Mr. Patil has been the
MP from Latur in Maharashtra seven times and has served
as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996. Mr. Patil
is at present the chairman of the Standing Committee on
Finance.

Rangasamy New Pondy CLP Leader
PONDICHERRY
:
Mr. N. Rangasamy was unanimously elected leader of the Congress
Legislature Party in the Union Territory, after the Chief
Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham, handed in his resignation to
the Lt. Governor, Dr. Rajani Rai.
The
52-year-old Mr. Rangasamy was Minister for PWD and Agriculture
in the Shanmugham Cabinet. His election became a formality
when the other contender, the former Chief Minister, Mr.
V. Vaithilingam, opted out of the race as he wanted to "clear
himself" in a pending court case.

Appointment
The
AICC general secretary, Mr. Oscar Fernandes, issued the
following statement on 12 November, 2001 : The Congress
president has asked Shri Ramesh Chennitala, Secretary AICC
to hold independent charge of the following States and Union
Territories : Goa, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Daman & Diu,
Dadar Nagar Haveli, Lakshdweep and Andaman Nicobar.

Singh Condemns Maneka’s Remarks
The
CWC member, Mr. Natwar Singh, issued the following
statement on November, 9, 2001 :
"We
are distressed but not surprised at the intemperate
attack launched by Smt. Maneka Gandhi, a junior minister
in the BJP-led government on Leader of the Opposition,
Smt. Sonia Gandhi.
Maneka
Gandhi has sought to convey that somehow Smt. Sonia
Gandhi was responsible for the publication of Catherine
Frank’s Biography of Indira Gandhi. This is preposterous
and false. It is widely known that it is not the wont
of Smt. Sonia Gandhi to speak about herself and her
family. Infact, Smt. Sonia Gandhi has always zealously
guarded the dignity and the privacy of her family.
Using her victory in a libel suit against the author
and the publisher specifically with regard to references
about herself, Maneka Gandhi launched a vituperative
attack on Smt. Sonia Gandhi in the media.
Public
memory is not so short as to forget the circumstances
and the manner in which Maneka Gandhi, made common
cause with the worst detractors of Indira Gandhi during
her lifetime and eventually accepted the position
of junior minister in the BJP-led government. The
BJP has been consistently hostile to the Gandhi family.
Maneka
Gandhi’s diatribe should be dismissed with the comtempt
it deserves. Her blatant attempt to raise controversy
using a wholly unrelated issue is of a piece with
the consistent attempt to remain relevant."
