Pranab Mukherjee: The life of a promising young leader has come to an end... During his tenure as the Communication Minister, rural communication system expanded vastly... He was totally dedicated to the cause of farmers.

He was one of the first to raise his voice against the hike in fertiliser prices and pointed both in Parliament and outside that the decision of the government would jeopardise our agriculture and food production. I remember how passionately he pleaded in both the plenary session of the Congress in Tirupati in 1992 and in Calcutta in 1997 to give industry status to agriculture. He was a strong believer in the democratic process and always advocated strengthening democratic norms in every sphere of activity... To him success and defeat were also part of the game and to follow the rules was his motto. He had this sterling quality. In his untimely death, the nation has lost a promising leader.

Digvijay Singh : His commitment to the disadvantaged people of the country was complete and unhesitant. Though on several occasions, he spoke against the party leadership, nobody could ever doubt his sincerity and loyalty to the organisation. There is no doubt that he always worked to strengthen the Congress.
Indeed, he belonged to a rare breed of leaders...jovial, courageous and totally dedicated to the welfare of the people, particularly farmers, members of the backward classes, minoritises and the Dalits.

Ashok Gehlot : It is a great loss to the party. Mr Pilot was a leader of eminence. Within the party he had his individualistic style of functioning.

Dr Girija Vyas : Rajesh was a dynamic leader who was totally committed to the cause of the poor and downtrodden.

Dr Shivraj Patil : The death of Rajesh Pilot is an irreparable loss to the party and the country.

A PROMISING LEADER : SONIA

It is difficult to find words which adequately convey my grief at the untimely passing away of Shri Rajesh Pilot in a car crash yesterday. He was in the prime of life and a great career awaited him. But there is no armour against fate.

Rajesh Pilot died in the servic of the people. He came from a modest background and it was through sheer hard work and determination that he carved a central place for himself and left a mark on our political life.

He was a very active member of the Congress Working Committee expressing his views with candour and vigour. His deep concern for the downtrodden, the underprivileged, the farmer and labourer was genuine and won him a large following through out the country. Not only the Congress Party but the country has lost a political personality of high ability and promise.

Our heart goes out to Smt Rama Pilot and her children. Their grief is shared by hundreds of thousands all over the country.
