Commemorating Dandi March

Jamshedpur: The Jharkhand Pradesh Sonia Gandhi Brigade and the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee Labour Cell organized a road-corner meeting here on 6th April to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Dandi March. The programme was presided over by Brigade's general secretary, Shri Shalendra Singh Chandel. Brigade president, Shri Baiju Mukhi and PCC (Labour Cell) vice-president, Shri Kishan Khana addressed the gathering.

The prominent Congressmen included Shri Vishnu Kumar Kamat, Shri Sheromani Singh, Shri Surendra Sharma, Shri Devashish Mukhi, Shri Chandrakant Mishra, Shri Surjeet Singh, Shri Pradeep Rai, Shri Suresh Jaina and others.

Ujjain: The City Congress Committee organized a padayatra here on 6 April to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Dandi March. Large number of Congress workers and office-bearers of the Youth Congress, Mahila Congress, Congress Sewa Dal and the NSUI. The central attraction of this yatra was Shri Kailash Shastri who was attired in clothes like Gandhiji. The nine-kilometer-long yatra started from Shahid Park and culminated at the statue of Gandhiji at Shirsagar by paying floral tributes and took pledge to follow the path shown by Gandhiji.

Those who participated in the yatra included Shri Rajendra Bharati, Shri Mahavir Vashist, Shri Satyanarayan Panwar, Shri Arun Rochivani, Shri Lakshman Jag, Shri Kailash Jain, Shri Gaurishanker Verma, Smt. Madhu Bhargav, Smt. Priti Bhargav, Shri Sultan Shah, Shri Ravi Bhadoria, Shri Yogesh Vyas and many others.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Congress Sevadal in commemoration of the 75th year of Dandi March took out a padayatra from Trichy to Vedharanayam village. According to Pradesh Chief Organiser, Shri K.S. Sivaprakasam, ex-MLA, the march started from Trichy with 250 Sevadal volunteers and covered the distance of 223 kilometres. Daily two DCC presidents were deputed to look after the marchers and public meetings and cultural programmes were held daily and the marchers were welcomed by the local people and Congress cadre.

On the concluding day, Union Minister, Shri EVKS Elangovan addressed the Sewadal volunteers and the meeting was attended by TNCC president, Shri G.K. Vasan, DCC presidents and other senior Congress leaders.

Varanasi: The Mahanagar Sonia Gandhi Brigade organized a padayatra here on 6 April to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the `Dandi Yatra'. The padayatra, which began from various parts of the city, assembled at Beniabagh where a statue of Mahatma is situated. On the occasion the workers of the Brigade offered floral tributes to the statue of the Mahatma and pledged to work on the path shown by Gandhiji.

Those who participated were Smt. Veena Pandeya, Shri Mukand Yadav, Shri Amitabh, Shri Dikshit, Shri Jaiprakash Dubey, Shri Dinesh Singh Kushwha, Shri Hanuman Sahni, Shri Poonam Kundu, Shri Jawaharlal Seth, Smt. Krishna Singh, Shri Mohanlal Gaur, Shri Heramani Gupta, Shri Lallon Tiwari, Shri Sushil Pandey, Shri Rattan Lal Gupta and others.

BAGESHWAR: The City Congress Committee here organized the Dandi Yatra's 75th anniversary on 2nd March. On the occasion the Congressmen under the leadership of local MLA, Shri Ram Prasad Tamta took out a march from Congress office to Kuthiatbada Surajkund via Labanj and Kausani. The people welcomed this yatra which was organized at Kausani where the speakers spoke on the life of Mahatma Gandhi and gave a call to follow the path shown by him. Present in the function were Shri Gopal Dutt Bhatt, Shri Suresh Lal Saha, Shri Ranjit Bora, Shri Inder Singh Parihar, Shri Sher Singh Parihar, Shri Lokmani Pathak, Shri Sanjay Saha Jagati, Shri Harish Karayat, Shri Mukhtar Ahmed and many others.
Lokpati Tripathi is Dead

VARANASI: Senior Congress leader and former Uttar Pradesh Minister Pandit Lokpati Tripathi died on 25 April at his residence in Aurangabad after prolonged illness.

Shri Tripathi, 79, son of late Kamlapati Tripathi, was suffering from kidney and lung ailments, his son Rajeshpati Tripathi said here. He is survived by a son and two daughters.

In his political career spanning about four decades, Shri Tripathi was elected five times to the Assembly since 1972 and was Cabinet Minister in HN Bahuguna, ND Tiwari, Sripati Mishra and Vir Bahadur Singh governments in 1970s and 1980s.

He had served the party in various capacities at the national and state level and was a Congress Working Committee (CWC) member in 1980.

An avid sports enthusiast, he had also served as the Indian Olympic Asociation vice-president and successfully organized the Indira Gandhi International Hockey Tournament in 1990s.

Bypoll in Seven States on 2nd June

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission announced on 2nd May, 2005 that byelections to the Shimoga Lok Sabha constituency and 17 Assembly constituencies, spread across seven states, would be held on June 2.

The bypolls to Shimoga in Karnataka was necessitated following the resignation of the former Chief Minister, Shri S Bangarappa, from the Bharatiya Janata Party before joining the Samajwadi Party, headed by Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The bypolls to Assembly seats included five from Goa, where President's rule had been imposed and the House kept under suspended animation.

The announcement of bypolls to five seats _ Taleigao, Cambarjua, Benaulim, Margao and Poinguinim _ had given rise to speculation that a popular government could be formed in Goa. The vacancies were caused due to the resignation of the incumbent MLAs. The 12 other Assembly constituencies where bypolls will be held are: Hainsarbazar, Varanasi North, Allahabad West and Kheragarh (Uttar Pradesh), Kiloi, Tosham and Hissar (Haryana), Azhikode and Kuthuparamba (Kerala), Penukonda (Andhra Pradesh), Zanskar (Jammu & Kashmir) and Chamrajapet (Karnataka).

According to the poll schedule announced by the EC, notification will be issued on May 9. Last date for filing nominations _ May 16; scrutiny the following day; last date for withdrawal of nominations _ May 19 and counting of votes on June5.
