Council of Minister

The Lok Sabha _ 2004 elections will go down in history for several firsts. The most prominent among them is Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, declining the post of Prime Minister. This has never happened not only in India but anywhere in the democratic world. What made the sacrifice most poignant and remarkable is the fact for six years she worked tirelessly to defeat the BJP-led NDA Government. In the just concluded Lok Sabha polls, she campaigned spiritedly covering the entire country unmindful of her security and health, mostly going on padayatras. In the process she revitalized the party converting it into an efficient machine capable of fighting for the causes that are sacrosanct to it and to the people of India. Another first was that for the first time the Congress Party formed a coalition, United Progressive Alliance, at the Centre. Smt. Gandhi could successfully bring together almost all the like-minded parties sharing the same ideals as Congress. This too has never happened before. Finally, for the first time an economist, Dr. Manmohan Singh has become the Prime Minister of India. These are enough signs that India is safe in the hands of Congress and Congress in the hearts and minds of people.
