LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Unforgivable Apathy

It is very disappointing to state that Gujarat - the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi - is witnessing violence unabatedly. Daily we read news of people getting murdered, injured and women raped. Even after 2 months of the Godhra incident the State administration has not been able to restore normalcy. It is unfortunate that the Modi Government and the BJP-led NDA Government are trying to gloss over the ongoing violence. It will be difficult for minority community as well as the secular-minded people to forgive the government’s apathy.

Various fact-finding teams that visited Gujarat following the riots have established that the administration and the police did little to contain the riots targetted against the minority community. Brutalities next committed under the very eyes of the State Government which remained inactive. As Smt. Sonia Gandhi said the violence in Gujarat is a symptom of a deep malaise afflicting India. Every right-thinking citizen must stand up to stop this before it is too late.

Create New History

The Congress party, in over 40 years of its rule, had never kept discrimination amongst the people. Today in Gujarat, thousands of houses have been torched, innocent women and children have been brutally murdered. I, through the column of Congress Sandesh, appeal to all the people of our country to vote for a Congress government at the Centre under the leadership of Smt. Sonia Gandhi so that the dreams of Indiraji and Rajivji are fulfilled. We have to create history by installing a Congress government at the Centre.

Congress is the Best

I have been getting Congress Sandesh every month which is very useful and morale-boosting for the workers. Rapid development of Rajasthan under the leadership of Shri Ashok Gehlot has once again proved that whether it is state or the Centre, only Congress governance is the best for the common people

New Column

Undoubtedly Congress Sandesh is able to enlighten the workers from grass roots to high level. I suggest to start a new section in which the Congressmen may express their views and memoirs. It will make the magazine more popular.

A-Block vice-president, Udaipur, Rajasthan

Vacations too Long

Ever since Justice Satya Brat Sinha has taken over as Chief Justice in Delhi High Court, he has initiated several welcome reforms to speed up justice in the court. But a very effective and possible remedy of abolishing long court vacations of British legacy is not affected so far. Courts are the only institutions where judges enjoy long court vacations of pre-independence era, with judges being paid without any work in these holidays. These long breaks were designated by Bristishers to facilitate British judges in India to visit their homelands (in those days by time consuming sea journey) thus also saving from hot weather of India. These undue vacations still exist in the country even after half a century when the Britishers left India. Justice Sinha can publicly suggest the Chief Justice of India to do away with this unholy system of long court vacations not only in Delhi but in the whole nation. Even the Comptroller and Auditor General of India can interfere to comment on such undesired long court breaks wasting public money on selected few for pay with no work in such vacancies.

Co-operative Cell

The cover page of the January, 2002 issue of Congress Sandesh is charming and attractive. The letter to Congress workers by our party President, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, is very encouraging to the youth. The articles in the journal are good. The write-up on the elections, the cartoon page are interesting. The AICC diary is very useful to Congress workers. So is feature on Congress Sessions. I hope the journal will continue forever.
