Once
again the BJP has shown it is not only a sore loser, it
is also incapable of functioning as a responsible opposition.
By boycotting the Railway budget under the spurious cause
of tainted ministers, their hypocrisy is clearly visible.
When Shri George Fernandes (Tehelka) and Shri L.K Advani,
charge sheeted in the Ayodhya’s Babri Masjid case can continue
to sit in Parliament, should not the same moral and legal
yardstick apply to others.
The
budget, both the railway and the national budget were successfully
presented and debated in Parliament. Budget 2004 has remained
close in spirit to the letter of the CMP and the charter
of the UPA. Its main focus has been on the need of the common
man who voted the UPA into power. It has aimed at revitalizing
the agricultural sector and agro industries. It has also
tried to provide succour to unemployed youth and other weaker
sections of society. Economic reforms have received a boost
alongwith a focus on health and education. Defense spending
has also been augmented. Altogether, India has been given
a sound and balanced budget after a long period. It now
remains to be seen whether the opposition will cooperate
in implementing the good programmes put forward in the first
budget of the new government.
