New MCD Standing Committee Chief

NEW DELHI: The two-time Congress Councillor from Adarsh Nagar, Shri Mukesh Goel, was on 31 December elected the new Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Shri Goel defeated his Bharatiya Janata Party rival, Vijender Kumar, by 13 votes. The 18-member Standing Committee has 14 Congress councillors and one BJP. Three seats had fallen vacant recently after the resignation of the three Congress Councillors, including its Chairman, Shri Ram Babu Sharma, who were elected to the Delhi Assembly.

Minutes before the election, the three other Congress candidates who were in the fray for the post _ the Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee, Ashok Jain, Shalu Malik and Sugreev Singh _ withdrew their nominations. Once Shri Goel's name was cleared by the party high command, the Congress Councillors in the Standing Committee held a formal meeting to elect their new chairman. The senior Congress leader, Shri Sajjan Kumar, and the former Standing Committee Chairman, Shri Ram Babu Sharma, were deputed by the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ch. Prem Singh, to attend the meeting.
