Congress
Policies
14.1.2005:
Shri Abhishek Singhvi addressed the media.
Shri
Abhishek Singhvi said that the Congress has always stood
for growth, industrialization and the common good, the green
revolution of the 60s, the computer revolution, the technology
missions, the liberalization of 1991 and onwards, all and
several others reflect the continued commitment of the Congress
to rapid industrialization to growth and to distributive
equity. Many of these years when these things were happening,
Shri Mulayam Singhji and his colleagues, including his current
very good friends, Shri George Fernandes and others spent
in opposing these Congress policies of industrialization.
It is therefore truly strong and truly ironic that Shri
Mulayam Singh and his party today accuse the Congress of
obstructing industrialization in Uttar Pradesh. May I remind
Mr. Mulayam Singh of the embarrassment a few days ago when
he happened to be seized from a Congress-led coalition government
and the Planning Commission, which is the part of the government,
more than what he had asked for by way of funds for Uttar
Pradesh. If this is step-motherly treatment, then I think
everybody would welcome such discriminatory treatment. It
is more likely that Shri Mulayam Singh, the government of
Uttar Pradesh and its party are looking for lame excuses
for not doing their duties and for covering up their acts
and omissions to start blaming the Congress for the lack
of industrialization in their state. It is truly sad that
on the one hand several Congress-ruled states like Maharashtra
or Andhra Pradesh or Karnatak are striding towards industrial
development and in Uttar Pradesh, the government is attempting
to suggest that the Congress in inhibiting the industrialization
of the state.
BJP
Hypocrisy
17.1.2005:
Shri Anand Sharma addressed the media.
Shri
Anand Sharma said that the BJP leadership and its condition,
of desperation is underscored by their decision to rope
in two stalwarts of the party who are both highly controversial,
both known for their bigoted mindsets and aggressive pursuit
of a divisive agenda. Uma Bharati was suspended after the
showdown with the party president in full public glare and
has been brought back only for the purpose of spearheading
the campaign. It shows the hypocrisy and bankruptcy of the
BJP not that it is going to invigorate the campaign of a
party which is both rudderless and directionless. Equally
significant is the drafting of Narendra Modi which also
goes to show the true face and intent of the BJP. Narendra
Modi is known for his controversial persona but he is also
remembered for having presided over a regime in Gujarat
which was guilty of deliberate default, when Gujarat witnessed
one of the most horrific blood-both in recent memory. His
administration has been indicted, exposed a person who had
as its state's Chief Minister lost the moral authority to
remain there, is again being projected as a hero by the
BJP. Inimically, only today the Commission of Inquiry has
given its report on the Godhra tragedy establishing conclusively
that the fire in the Sabarmati Express coach on 27th
February, 2002 was due to an accident and it started within
the coach itself which was duly reported, before the fire
spread and when the smoke started, to the CRPF and the RPF
and those records were there and there was no explosive
material or inflammable liquid which was thrown from outside.
Now, what this inquiry commission has established is the
exact timing, the place when the train was moving when the
fire had started and these records were definitely available
in 2002. As the commission says it was reported immediately,
so it is mysterious that why the then administration and
the government remained silent? Why did they hide this fact
when that incident was used for on organised, pre-mediated
communal violence which infact, was a shameful stigma and
remains a painful scar on the soul of India's liberal and
constitutional democracy.
Sonia
Gandhi's Advice
19.1.2005:
Smt. Jayanti Natarajan addressed the media.
Smt.
Jayanti Natarajan said that the Congress president, Smt.
Sonia Gandhi today met all the candidates nominated by the
Congress party for the Haryana assembly elections and she
conveyed to them, emphasizing the importance of fighting
a fair election. An election based upon fundamentally on
the welfare and progress of the people of Haryana. While
fighting a transparent election based upon the highest principles
of democracy. Smt. Gandhi discussed with each candidates
the best way of putting across the party's message to the
people of Haryana and the best way of putting forward on
agenda for the progress and development of the state and
for the creation of a stable, responsive and people-oriented
government in Haryana in the forthcoming elections.
Smt.
Jayanti Natarajan placed on record on behalf of the Congress
party our severe condemnation of the act of the Home Minister
of Rajasthan, Shri Kataria in withdrawing over 165 criminal
cases, several of which were pending against himself. It
is an act unprecedented and totally unacceptable in parliamentary
democracy. A person who has been elected by the people and
serving as the Home Minister of the state, who should be
the custodian of law and order of that state, sitting as
both judge and juror over his own case and withdrawing cases
against himself, cases against other ministerial colleagues,
cases against several MLAs of the ruling party and even
going to the extent of withdrawing cases against government
employees who had openly campaigned for the BJP-NDA alliance
during the elections to the Rajasthan assembly.
Despair
in BJP Camp
24.1.2005:
Shri Anand Sharma addressed the media.
Shri
Anand Sharma said that there is disappointment in the BJP
camp even before the campaign for the first phase has peaked.
The Congress has deployed its campaign teams, the publicity
teams in all the three states, our manifestos which have
been released for two states had clearly identified the
priorities for the governments to be formed by the Congress
on its own in Haryana and alongwith allies in Jharkhand
and Bihar. We are confident of a major victory in Haryana
and also of forming a stable government with convincing
majority in Jharkhand. BJP and JD(U) are surely headed for
another defeat in Bihar.
Jungle
Raj
28.1.2005:
Shri Abhishek Singhvi addressed the media.
It
is most unfortunate that India's largest state reflects
all the trappings of `jungle raj' and there appears not
to be virtually any law and order worth the name functioning
in that state. It appears that some of this cannot happen
without the active connivance of law and order forces themselves
and the police force themselves. It is unfortunate but true
that when, for example the Kaluwa Yadav gang in the Furrokhabad
incidents was apprehended with large materials of the Samajwadi
Party were seized and indeed flags of the Samajwadi Party
were also seized. It is unfortunate that the more recent
incidents is sought to be given a communal colour, both
by the BJP and by the Samajwadi Party. The Congress believes
that it is imperative to guard against such divisive schemes
and conspiracies and we hope and trust that a swift CBI
inquiry to the matter will ascertain the true state of affairs.
We do believe that law and order seemed to have slipped
into the hands of the criminals in that state.
Whirlwind
in Goa
31.1.2005:
Shri Abhishek Singhvi addressed the media.
Shri
Abhishek Singhvi said "we believe that the BJP should
have or is reminded yet once again that you cannot fool
people more than once and certainly you cannot fool all
the people all the time. The anti-corruption storm in Goa
has converted into the Tsunami of the people's rage and
anger in that state and it will drown the BJP, not only
in Goa but across the country and particularly in Haryana,
Jharkhand and Bihar. Those who do not drown in shame are
condemned to be buried by their acts and omissins. This
is the fate, this is the destiny of the BJP. Those who sow
a storm must be prepared to reap a whirlwind. The BJP is
living on barrowed oxygen in Goa. It has repeated in that
state its Tehelka-model of corruption. It has now graduated
from the Bangaru-Judeo Party to the `Bhrashtachar Jammao
Party'. The Congress believes that it will discharge its
constitutional role and responsibilities with full and due
dignity. I must remind you that when the PCC president of
Goa, some months ago, addressed you in Parliament, he had
occasion to list specific acts of corruption and in a sense
the simmering earthquake was visible then which has now
taken its toll.
