Naxalite
problem has begun demanding national attention. What with
Maoist insurgency assuming menacing proportions in neighbouring
Nepal and Naxalite groups in some of our own states becoming
aggressive and bold, this problem needs to be attended to
urgently. Already there are disturbing reports of possible
impact on Bihar and Uttar Pradesh which share borders with
Nepal. To make matters worse both Bihar and UP are today
standing out for total breakdown of law and order among
the Indian states. The Union Government is favouring talks
with the Naxalites while advocating strong measures whenever
and wherever required. The Andhra Pradesh government has
held one round of talks. But before the second round is
held confrontation between the police and the Naxalites
broke out dimming the chances of further negotiations. It
is difficult to say how talks can help since what the Naxalites
demand is invariably not acceptable to any democratic government.
The solution lies in what Smt. Sonia Gandhi had said sometime
back that economic development of the neglected rural areas
alone can solve the Naxalite problem. Time to pay attention
to rural areas.
