 Next
round of Assembly elections are due in February in Haryana,
Bihar and Jharkhand. In Haryana and Jharkhand, we are in
opposition while in Bihar we are part of the ruling coalition
led by Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD. These bare facts are enough
to indicate how tough and at the same time how important
is this election round. The party high command, led by Smt.
Sonia Gandhi has been striving hard to prepare the party
units in these states for the poll battle. These efforts
can bear fruit only if the rank and file of these state
too take the election seriously. The most important aspect
that needs close and urgent attention is the unity of the
party. Being a party that combines and represents every
section of our diverse society, there will always be various
strands of thought and even action. This by itself need
not scare us as long as we keep in mind our goal and our
mission _ to provide a good, responsive government that
meets peoples' hopes and aspirations. The second aspect
is forming alliances. For this, first we must assess our
own strength and view the entire matter in national perspective.
