The Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, has completed five years in office on April 6, 2003. The future of the party looked grim and its prospects dismal when she took the bold plunge fired by the urge to rescue the party from going into oblivion. These five years were marked by hard struggle and total commitment. A sheer miracle happened and the party rose virtually from its sick-bed as a new resurgent organization and won Assembly elections State-after-State. Today more than half of the total states are with the Congress, thanks to the exemplary stewardship of Smt. Sonia Gandhi.

One of the several new initiatives Smt. Gandhi has taken in these five eventful years was the first-ever Convention of the Block and District Congress Committee Presidents held in New Delhi on 28-29 March, 2003 followed by a massive public rally the next day. The action plan innunciated by Smt. Gandhi at the Convention will further strengthen the party in its run-up to the coming Assembly polls and the General election next year.
