MAHILA CONGRESS

The Mahila Congress feels proud at its president, Smt. Rita Bahuguna Joshi, having been part of the Indian delegation at the UN Commission on the Status of Women, which she attended from 2nd to 9th March, 2005.

The month of March is not only the month of Women's International Day, but also when the Dandi yatra was held, which was one of the solid foundation stone for social empowerment of women in our nation. The women, till then always in purdah, kept the Dandi Andolan strongly alive even after Bapu was jailed, and were arrested in lakhs. On the 75th anniversary of the Dandi yatra, the AIMC president, Dr. Rita Bahuguna Joshi participated in the yatra flagged off by our revered leader, Smt. Sonia Gandhi from Sabarmati. Meanwhile, all over the nation women participated in strong numbers in the token yatras in all districts and towns. In the Yatra flagged off from `Gandhi Smriti' (Delhi), Dr. Jaya Shukla (AIMC) and Smt. Motia Garg (DPMC president) participated. To organize various aspects regarding women's participation in the Dandi Smriti Yatra at Gujarat, Dr. Sushma Yadav (AIMC incharge of state) and Smt. Renu Poswal visited the state. For creating awareness about the Dandi March in women, as well as ensuring their participation in large numbers in the Yatra, a panel of six women from AIMC has been sent to Gujarat, who will tour and reach the final leg at Dandi with Mahilas from the district. These women are: Smt. Manju Hembrum, Dr. Jaya Shukla, Dr. Sushma Yadav, Dr. Shobhna Shah, Smt. Nusrat Rizvi and Smt. Kamla Sahni.

The Women's Day was celebrated in all centers via relevant social activities and functions. The MPMC president, Smt. Shobha Oza organized a very successful seminar in Bhopal on "What should be the punishment for a rapist". It was attended by Dr. Shobhna Shah (AIMC incharge of MP), the DIG, women psychiatrists and activist women. Most of them wanted court judgement within three months while a large number of them wanted much stronger punishment, more than 10% wanted death penalty. The `Samajic Mahila Sangthan' organized in Dehradun (6th March) through Dr. Jaya Shukla, a women's workshop on Self Financing Groups. The Chandigarh UT president, Smt. Lalit Joshi started a Mahila Congress `Sonia Gandhi Women's Tailoring Center' with seven machines organized by Major Krishnamohini. She also presided over a similar function in Solan (HP), which Smt. Banarasi Meghwal (AIMC) also attended with the tailoring center getting five machines through Major Krishnamohini, fifteen Congress women were honoured there. `Each One Teach One' forms were also distributed. The Orissa PMC president, Smt. Ashima Mahananda organized a function at Bhuvneshwar with Smt. Hema Gomang (secretary AICC) as chief guest and Smt. Vijyalaxmi Sahu (AIMC) also addressing. Children's debate and drawing competitions were held. Reports have come in from Kotdwar (organized by Smt. Sunita Bisht), Gurgaon (organized by Smt. Asha Sharma), Guwahati (celebrated as Women's Empowerment Day), etc.

In the PCC function upon completion of three years of the Congress government in Uttaranchal, Dr. Jaya Shukla (AIMC) attended with women activists. A sightless lady member of the Viklang Vikas Department of the Maharashtra PCC, Ms. Vaishali Salavare has been selected to represent India in the International Chess Competition for the blind, to be held at Athens (Greece).
