SMT. SONIA GANDHI

Srimati Sonia Gandhi - a devoted housewife with two children; patron of many national trusts, museums and child-welfare associations; a keen student of Indian history and culture - entered public life, after seven long years of public persuation and respecting the demands of Congress workers, after her beloved husband late Shri Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on 21 May, 1991 in a dastardly act of terrorism. She vigorously campaigned for Congress on the eve of 1998 Parliamentary elections and was thus elected Party President in April, 1998.

Before entering politics Smt. Sonia Gandhi had spent considerable time looking after the affairs of Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. It was during her association with the Foundation when she devoted special attention to the welfare of women, children and disabled. She also showed her keen interest and attention towards the application of Science and Technology espousing social cause.

She is also a patron of the prestigious Round Square (International Group of Schools based on the principles of education of Dr. Kust Hahn) and Indian Member, International Advisory Group of the United Nations (set up to mark 50th Anniversary of UNO).

Smt. Sonia Gandhi is equally concerned for the cause of the weaker sections, SCs/STs, minorities, poor and orphan children and countinously strive for their welfare. She is the Chairperson of Indian Council for Child Welfare, in addition to presiding over the activities of Nehru Trust for Cambridge University.

As Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi personally supervised the sincere and laudable efforts of the Congress Party to provide relief to the Gujarat Earthquake victims.

Smt. Sonia Gandhi was elected to Loksabha in October, 1999 from Amethi Parliamentary Constituency in Uttar Pradesh with a record margin of more than three hundred thousand votes and since then, is the leader of opposition in Loksabha. She also presided over the Plenary Session of the Indian National Congress held on March, 17 & 18, 2001 at Bangalore.
